Interoperability standards, such as LTI, are essential to evolving the campus learning ecosystem to provide both flexibility and choice for faculty and students. At Duke, the Kits project leverages these standards to provide a next generation digital learning environment (NGDLE) for the Duke community and, as an open-source project, to the wider world. Kits was developed outside the LMS and provides turnkey roster access to learning apps through a homegrown group management solution based on Internet2’s Grouper system. The design of Kits gives students a single point of access to all learning apps used in all of their courses. For faculty, it provides an alternative to the LMS with scalable, integrated app choices to meet their disciplinary or pedagogical needs.
